I'm going to say that Katelyn's race and everyone elses race, at NXN was compromised due to weather and running conditions. Very cold, wet, and extremely muddy with runners going down all over the place, katelyn could have easily have lost that race on that alone. But no she gutted it out with numb feet and hands won anyways. Under circumstances like that, you're lucky to finish without falling or getting injured. To win and get pushed by some talented girls who have been chasing her for 4 years and only catch her because of a mid year injury and a bad weather race? Nah, Dudek has had a stellar year, don't get me wrong, but a Touhy matching year? You've lost your mind buddy! I'm calling shenanigans and say this a case of people loving to hate on number 1. This is like choosing anyone in the NBA over Jordan in his prime as MVP of the league and using shotty arguments and completely ignoring all the details to justify them. As for anyone arguing whether she isn't the greatest highschool runner of all time, which I suspect you would, you probably would lose, but even if you didn't, she is most certainly and without question the greatest long distance runner of all time. And to argue against that is just futile because no male or female highschool runner has dominated, so absolutely, the entire country year after year the way she has. And oh yeah, why didn't Dudek run NXN knowing Touhy would be there? I know why. Dudek likes to win. If she wanted to race the best Touhy was right there waiting for her. You want to be the best? You don't race at another meet. You go where the best is and beat them on their own turf. She wouldn't have at NXN. Touhy was the two time defending champ and has times that smoke Dudeks at her best that aren't near Touhy's best. SMH. You've done everyone a disservice here.

XC Guy, I just thought I'd add my 2 cents. Having watched Katelyn run many times in the Northeast over the last 6 years, I don't understand how you could possible make Dudek a co #1. I'm not trying to take anything away from her season, she had a great one, but she did not go undefeated this season! Katelyn ran a speed rating over 160 8 times this season, meanwhile, there were only approximately 6 or 7 other races all year that somebody ran a 160 or better! Finally, if you are weighing the end of the season championships so heavily, you have to look at Katelyn's race last week @ the USATF's Club Championships. She came in 2nd against some pretty good competition in sloppy conditions. Oh by the way, ran about the same pace as Dudek did in winning Footlocker in good conditions, and held that pace for an additional 1K on top of that. I respectfully disagree with this co rating!

Hi James - That's a passionate response and I fully respect your opinion. Let me assure you that no one is "above" Katelyn Tuohy in this end-of-season ranking. They are co-No. 1s. And it has nothing to do with Tuohy's previous seasons. It does have a lot to do with the championship races, as well it should. Tuohy showed magnificent resolve holding off two challengers at the end of NXN and yes, it was a challenging day. None of the top girls were falling. It was a fair race. It's cross country. Dudek ran the fastest time at Foot Locker at Balboa Park in 25 years. She doesn't deserve some credit for that? How fast would she have had to run in your mind to earn a co-No. 1 ranking with Tuohy? Katelyn's best speed rating of the year was 170. Dudek's was 169 at Foot Locker. Tuohy's was 163 at NXN. I would vote for Tuohy as the high school runner of the decade for her body of work over five years. But at the end of this particular cross country season, yes, I see it as a toss-up. Much closer that you might expect. I also don't believe that Dudek was ducking a matchup with Tuohy at NXN. Dudek wants to represent her native Poland in the Olympic Games some day. Running for her country at the European championships is probably a good move for her. Tuohy could have chosen to run at Foot Locker and then take an at-large invite to NXN, but she decided to do something else instead. That's OK too.
